Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the data come from?

All data comes from the NCES Common Core of Data (CCD), accessed through the Urban Institute Education Data API. CCD is the official annual census of U.S. public schools conducted by the federal government.

What is Title I?

Title I is the largest federal elementary and secondary education program. It provides financial assistance to schools with high percentages of children from low-income families. Schools can be Title I school-wide (the whole school qualifies) or Title I targeted assistance (specific students are served).

What is the free/reduced lunch rate?

The National School Lunch Program provides free or reduced-price meals to students from families with incomes below certain thresholds. The rate is widely used as a proxy for economic disadvantage at the school level.

How current is the data?

The data reflects the 2022–23 school year, which is the most recent complete year available from NCES CCD. Data is cached for 1 hour.

How do I find a school?

Search by state and optionally city. Each school has a unique NCESSCH identifier used by the federal government.

Is this free?
